News and Updates

Pork Day USA 2016 Albion, IL shared their photo.

Thank you again to everyone who helped in some way with Pork Day this year. A special thanks to Heather Thomas-Waters who stepped up big time and helped with the vendors. Your help was much appreciated! Also to Rebecca Snodgrass taking the 5K and literally running with it. Rebecca Perry was also a great support system throughout. Thanks to many members of my courthouse family who volunteered to help...you are the dysfunctional family that I'm happy (most days...ha ha) to be a part of. A huge thanks to Sonja Shinkle & Brian Shinkle (Thomas too) who have helped me any time I needed it with planning, set-up, take down, you name it. The employees at City Hall have been an enormous help throughout. They have fielded calls, taken applications, etc. Thanks to the volunteers who gave their time at Pork Day.... AGS Cheerleaders with Limbo, Ian Gill with balloon animals, Seily Seily Smith Gerlach for reading Albion Pig and If you Give a Pig a Porkburger, Sydnee Etheridge for organizing the dunk tank, Lexie Shepherd for keeping track of the kids area, the students who volunteered to work in the kids area, Albion First Baptist Church who also worked in the kids area. Also, Mac Dalton who showed up on his own with replacement sound equipment and returned after everyone had left at the end of the night to assist with clean-up. Our vendor, Elvis, who gave up his retirement on Friday to help with the electrical set-up. This man has been assisting Pork Day for over 40 years. He loves our town and drives from West Frankfort just to help. His son-in-law was a great help as well. Dustin Hawkins & Tracy Beuligmann who took on the nightmare known as the parade. My daughter Bailey Chaise Alka, who spent hours trying to make the day special for some little princesses. Gabe Smith, who worked with the revolving door of sound equipment....The 4th set was the charm! My husband Harold Alka and his fellow members of the Albion Fire Department who took my idea of having a water ball contest and brought it to life. I know the hours of planning and preparation that it took to make it work. Thanks to Danny Iverson who was a great help with the water ball, fixing last minute broken items the morning of set-up, etc. I'm sure I have left off others.... Finally, the biggest thanks goes to my family. First to my immediate family who have made the request to make Pork Day an off limit word for the next few weeks. The amount of things they have helped with and listened to over the past six months could fill a book. My daughter Sage, who has given up her summer with me so that I can bring Pork Day to life. My sister, Stephanie Kelby Schwarzlose and her family were also a great help. Their commitment was made abundantly apparent on Friday & Saturday. You see, few people show up when it's time to set-up and do the dirty work. They helped haul chairs, trash cans, etc. In the middle of it all, they were called away for a medical emergency including an ambulance ride and hospital stay. They still managed to run back and help me before returning to the hospital again because they knew I needed the help. Next, thanks to my mother-in-law Janice Alka who provided her truck for the contestants, promoted the event, etc. Last, a special thanks to my parents. My mom helped with set-up and take down both days until late among other things. My dad, he has helped with so many things that I can't list them all. I don't know of many mayors who have helped from beginning to end. For instance, he helped to haul the chairs and then on Sunday picked up and returned every single one on his own in the heat. Chairs which were scattered everywhere. He helped with lots of set-up, take down, planning, emptied trash, etc. Much of the dirty work.

I have a great family, great friends, and I am very thankful for each of you! --Becky Alka, organizer of the 2016 Pork Day USA
